Having seen the title of this article, those of you in the club may already be thinking; what, did those clever computer scientists find a way to make a laser printer sufficiently small to be considered portable? Unfortunately the answer is no, there is no such thing as a portable laser printer, and we're going to consider the reasons why. First, let's take a basic look at how HP Laser Printers work. Most of the Laser printers work on a page by page basis. A laser scans across the outside of a drum that revolves, and flashes off and on to make a dot on the drum that has a different polarity to the remainder of the drum. The drum is rolled across a chunk of paper, transferring the toner to the paper. Inkjet printers are far simpler and involve way smaller elements. A liquid ink is passed out of the cartridge by varying techniques that result in the ink being passed out, thru a print head and onto the paper. thanks to the way that the two machines work, they're sized way dif ferently. Laser printers are enormous, and heavy machines that require big quantities of power to run the lasers and the produce the high heat needed to bond the toner to the paper-too much to be provided by a cartable battery. Inkjets don't contain an imaging drum-instead manufacturing the images through the print heads. The power required is much littler, and thus is able to be supplied by a battery. for this reason it is inkjet printers that may be able to be made sufficiently small to be portable. The lightest movable inkjet is just 2lb in weight, but the tiniest laser printer currently is 10lb and fourteen inches wide, by 9 deep. The size would be unattractive in a cartable, the weight of a laser printer would be even less movable and there is another downside. Most laser printers are black and white only or Monochrome Laser Printers. Few are color and are exceedingly pricey.
