Is It Time To Upgrade Your Printer? - Technology

Deciding whether or not it is time to upgrade a computer may be a costly decision to make for a number of reasons. For a printer that is shared by a network, one of the major considerations of upgrading is the benefit that it will provide to the entire group, not just one person.

Network printers are a useful resource and upgrading them can increase production exponentially when the printer is functioning at optimal capacity. How do you know when it is time to upgrade your printer? There may be some warnings signs that are subtle that are the early indications that it is time to upgrade your printer's accessories or parts.

Knowing what the print out capacity is of your printer is the first step to determining if it is functioning properly. Are you getting the proper number or pages from each toner cartridge? Does the printer jamb pages often or lose printing assignments that appear in the queue but never print out? The printer that does not print the right amount of pages may not need an upgrade but rather may require service.

For professional grade printers in a business setting that have to put out a large volume of work, inner parts may get worn down quickly and need to be routinely replaced. A service technician can examine the printer to determine if such is the case. A printer that is losing documents may have a communication issue with the computers that are connected to it. Sometimes it is necessary to power down the printer, remove all cables and reattached as well as to reboot the computer to iron out the kinks.

For a home printer that is used regularly, the dynamics of upgrading a printer are not the same as for a network printer, even if several computers in the home are using the same printer. Many homes have a printer that has a variety of other features included such as a fax machine, scanner, and copier all in one. While these multi-function printer machines may seem the best deal of the moment, they are some of the more challenging models to upgrade, particularly when it comes to newer modeled notebook computers, laptops and iPads.

No matter what type of printer is in question, there are some basic functions that the printer should continue to perform just as it did when it first came out of the box. When printing capacity is diminished, it may signal that an upgrade of printer drivers is required.

This is a simple process that often just involves going to the manufacturer's website, downloading the drivers and letting the computer have access to install them. Routine maintenance of your printer can sometimes reveal the need for an update. More sophisticated printers with drums may have to have the drum updated or replaced after so many uses.

Before determining that an upgrade or update is what your printer needs, make sure that recently installed programs or equipment are not the culprit of your printer not functioning as expected. Many operating system programs share themselves with the printer, computer and other hardware and a new program or piece of equipment may be the reason why your printer is not functioning properly.

There are many printers from the leading brands that go great with the top of the range computers.
